QUILTED CHAIR
GEORGIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, 2022

MY GOAL FOR THIS PROJECT WAS TO CREATE AN OBJECT THAT WOULD PROMPT A CONVERSATION ABOUT WHAT WORKS WE TRADITIONALLY CONSIDER WORTHY OF THE TITLE 'INDUSTRIAL DESIGN'.

TO DO THIS, I TOOK A HISTORICALLY FEMININE CRAFT METHOD — QUILTING —AND APPLIED IT TO THE BODY OF A MASS MANUFACTURED CHAIR. BY DOING THIS, I INTENDED TO HIGHLIGHT THE CULTURAL CONNOTATIONS AROUND THE FIELD OF DESIGN. NAMELY, THAT OFTEN THE MORE TECHNICAL AND MANUFACTURING-FOCUSED PARTS OF THE FIELD ARE REGARDED AS SERIOUS AND MASCULINE, WHILE THE MORE GRAPHIC-FOCUSED, SOFT GOODS PARTS ARE REDUCED TO HOBBIES AND CONNOTATED WITH FEMININE INTEREST.
